Coaching Your Inner Team
An introduction to David Grove’s Pronoun Scapes work, developed by Dr. Caitlin Walker.
In preparation, please do the following:
1. Read the script below, and have a copy (physical or electronic) to hand for the session.
2. Gather together some paper and coloured pens or pencils and have them to hand for the session.
3a. Think about an outcome or problem that you would like to work on during this exercise. See a couple of examples below.
3b. Write or draw (physically or electronically) the outcome or problem and bring it to the session.
Some examples of outcomes are:
“I’d like to be able to run 5k without stopping.”
“I’d like to be more resilient, like a harbour wall that water breaks over.”
Script – Coaching your inner team
You’ll be working in pairs. One is the facilitator and the other the focus of attention (client). The facilitator reads out the bold text to the focus.
What would you like to have happen?
Write down their answer as the original outcome.
I
And… I, and when I, where is I?
Focus responds.
And what kind of I, is that I?
Focus responds.
And is there anything else about I?
Focus responds.
And that I is like what?
Focus responds; write down the response.
ME
And… me, and when me, where is me?
Focus responds.
And what kind of me, is that me?
Focus responds.
And is there anything else about me?
Focus responds.
And that me is like what?
Focus responds; write down the response.
YOU
And… you, and when you, where is you?
Focus responds.
And what kind of you, is that you?
Focus responds.
And is there anything else about you?
Focus responds.
And that you is like what?
Focus responds; write down the response.
MYSELF
And… myself, and when myself, where is myself?
Focus responds.
And what kind of myself, is that myself?
Focus responds.
And is there anything else about myself?
Focus responds.
And that myself is like what?
Focus responds; write down the response.
AND WHEN…
<Metaphor/description of I>, what would ‘I’ like to have happen with <original outcome>?
<Metaphor/description of me>, what would ‘me’ like to have happen with <original outcome>?
<Metaphor/description of you>, what would ‘you’ like to have happen with <original outcome>?
<Metaphor/description of myself>, what would ‘myself’ like to have happen with <original outcome>?
And when all of that, what would you like to have happen now?
